Early Springtime and Earlier Fishing This Year

I’m filing this under Fishing Reports. This is not a fishing report per se, but it’s relevant…

Due to a winter that never really arrived, the Mid Atlantic states are experiencing an early spring. Everything has been happening sooner this year. In my yard, the crocuses started blooming over two weeks ago and they’re fading now. That is at least two weeks early. Daffodils are flowering all over, again, two weeks earlier than usual. Following these botanical cues are the bugs, the hatches, and of course the fish. Fishing season is coming sooner this year for sure.

Reports are confirming all of this. Douglas Dear from Rose River Farm in Syria Virginia reported this past week that Quill Gordons have started hatching — two weeks early. Murray’s Fly Shop reported Quill Gordons coming off the water yesterday afternoon in Shenandoah National Park as well. Bryan Kelly at Kelly’s White Fly Shop in Shepherdstown, West Virginia sent an email yesterday about smallmouth bass fishing around Harper’s Ferry on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers: “We are starting to guide this month. The fish are moving out of their winter patterns towards pre-spawn behavior.  Spawn will be early, and summer patterns will be early… You need to be early…” If this pre-spawn behavior is starting now, that’s closer to three weeks earlier than last year in my neck of the woods along the main stem of the Shenandoah. Incidentally, he goes on to mention that the cicadas will be emerging along the northern section of the Blue Ridge this year, so tie up some big cicada patterns.

So this could be shaping up as a phenomenal early season for us. Hopefully it’s not going to mean that the hot, low clear water conditions come early and stay longer, too. Perhaps we’ll see a nice stretch of cool rains in mid to late spring to break us out of this warm dry pattern we’ve gone through this winter.

Maryland Trout Stocking Schedule Mar 2 2012

Best I can tell, these are the streams Maryland stocked with trout this past week. For some reason, the dates are out of order. I suppose they didn’t fully update the site last week so some of what’s below may be as of a week ago…

Updated Resources Page

I’ve updated the resources page to include the Washington DC area. Most notably, the Tidal Potomac Flyrodders, which is a large and growing group devoted to fishing the Potomac River right in DC. I am a member and you should consider joining, too, if you fish anywhere near the DC metro area, Northern Virginia and Maryland. Also, one of the TPFR members recently posted a Google map showing good fishing spots on the Potomac around Fletcher’s Cove.

Devin’s Fishing Reports

I ran across this blog today, Devin’s Fishing Reports. This guy is 15 years old and he’s out fishing pretty often. His site has lots of good info about trout fishing around Thurmont, Maryland, including Big Hunting Creek and nearby streams. Check it out!

UPDATE: I got this from a comment on Devin’s blog – Frederick County Maryland At-A-Glance is a great resource if you’re planning on bushwhacking around Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls State Park or Frederick Municipal Forest for some brook trout. Shows property lines and other information on an interactive map. I’ve updated the Resources link on this site.

Famed Presidential Fly Fishing Retreat for Sale

Hoover Fly Fishing
President Hoover on a stream that is way too wide to be Little Hunting Creek.

On this Presidents Day holiday I tripped over this article about Trout Run, a property in the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland that is now for sale, $9 million asking price. This former presidential retreat and highfalutin “rustic hideaway” is very close to Camp David and was actually preferred by a few of our presidents due to its proximity to Little Hunting Creek.

Herbert Hoover, though he is known to have spent more time fishing at his camp on the Rapidan River in what is now Shenandoah National Park, was the first president to spend time here. Following him were Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower (although he reportedly preferred watercolor painting there more than fishing). Hoover, though, was the only real presidential fly fisherman to have visited:

He reported — “with a slight egotism!” — that only he, Teddy Roosevelt and Grover Cleveland “had been lifelong fly-fishermen before they went to the White House.”

I literally stumbled onto Trout Run last year on one of my Catoctin National Park area fishing explorations. I inadvertently followed Little Hunting Creek upstream until I was on the Trout Run property line, complete with a chain across the stream and a sign warning against further intrusion. I can tell you that even though I caught nothing there that day it’s a beautiful place. Is it worth the price? I have no idea, and fortunately that’s not relevant for a man of my means. But you — you may be more interested. Click on the first link above for more info…

Maryland Trout Stocking Schedule Feb 10 2012

Maryland’s pre-season trout stocking program is well underway. Interesting that Maryland’s website notes the West Virginia DNR trout stocking in the North Branch of the Potomac. I guess that thin slice of western Maryland is hard to completely untangle from West Virginia with respect to its fisheries.

Just when I thought it had changed the way it reports how it stocks its streams, Maryland goes and updates its trout stocking schedule like they always have. Go figure…
